How to Clean Suede Shoes Safely

Start cleaning suede shoes with gentle dry brushing and use a suitable suede cleaner only when more cleaning is needed.

Adding any moisture or cleaning products can permanently darken some types of suede. Check the footwear maker’s instructions and test any product on a hidden area before treating the rest of the shoe.

What you need to clean suede shoes

  • A clean, soft brush, such as the Renapur Horsehair Brush.
  • A clean, soft cloth that will not transfer colour.
  • A suitable suede cleaner if brushing alone is not enough.
  • A dry, ventilated place away from direct heat and sunlight.

Renapur Sneaker Cleaner is suitable for routine cleaning of compatible suede and nubuck. It helps remove everyday dirt and grime, but is not intended to remove established stains or permanent discolouration.

1. Check the shoes and let mud dry

Read the care label and identify the materials before you begin. Suede trainers may also contain smooth leather, mesh, fabric or decorative finishes that need different treatment. Follow the instructions for your particular footwear, especially sheepskin boots and specialist finishes.

Let wet mud dry before brushing it away. For a fresh liquid spill, gently blot up what you can straight away with a clean, absorbent cloth. Avoid rubbing it further into the suede.

2. Brush away loose dirt

Use a clean, soft brush on dry suede, working gently with the direction of the nap. Remove loose dust and dried dirt without pressing hard or repeatedly scrubbing one area.

If this leaves the shoes looking clean, you can stop here. There is no need to add a cleaning product simply because it is part of a routine.

3. Test the cleaner on a hidden area

Suede colours and finishes react differently to cleaning. Moisture and cleaning products can cause darkening or changes in texture, which may be permanent.

Follow the footwear maker’s care advice and the product instructions. If further cleaning is needed, test your chosen product on a small, hidden area of the same material. An area beneath a lace or on a concealed part of the tongue may be suitable. Let it dry completely before assessing the colour and texture.

If the colour or texture changes, or you are unsure whether the treatment is suitable, stop and seek advice from the footwear maker or a suede cleaning specialist.

4. Clean gently with a small amount of foam

To use Renapur Sneaker Cleaner, apply a small amount of foam to a soft brush or cloth. Carefully work it into the suitable suede, using light pressure.

Avoid soaking the shoe or adding more product in an attempt to force out a stubborn mark. If you are using a different suede shoe cleaner, follow its own instructions, including whether it should be applied across a whole panel.

5. Wipe away excess foam and dirt

Use a clean, soft cloth to remove excess foam and loosened dirt. Work gently and remove remaining cleaning residue before moving on to protection.

Do not rinse or submerge the shoes unless the footwear maker specifically instructs you to do so.

6. Dry naturally and gently lift the nap

Leave the shoes to dry naturally in a ventilated place. Keep them away from radiators, hairdryers and direct sunlight. Drying time varies with the material, conditions and amount of moisture used.

Once completely dry, gently brush the suede to lift and settle the nap. Check the result before deciding whether any further attention is needed. Repeated wet cleaning can make an existing problem harder to resolve.

How to approach different marks on suede

Dried mud and surface dirt

Let mud dry, then remove it with a soft brush. Routine dirt may lift without any wet treatment. If grime remains, follow the patch testing and cleaning steps above.

Light scuffs

A scuff may be flattened fibres rather than a stain. Gentle brushing can help lift the nap. A dedicated suede rubber may help with some surface marks where the footwear maker allows it. Test discreetly and avoid heavy pressure.

Water marks

Let the shoe dry completely before assessing a water mark. If a ring or uneven colour remains, follow the manufacturer’s advice or ask a suede cleaning specialist. Avoid repeatedly wetting the area in the hope of making it match.

Oil, grease, salt and persistent stains

Blot fresh spills without rubbing. Oil, grease, salt marks and older stains may need a specialist treatment suited to the particular suede. An everyday cleaner cannot guarantee their removal. Seek advice before trying stronger products, particularly on delicate or valuable footwear.

How moisture can affect suede

Rain, a damp cloth or a liquid care product can make suede look darker. Some darkening is temporary while the material is wet, but water marks or lasting changes in appearance may remain.

Always let a test area dry completely before judging the colour and texture. If the result is uneven or different from the finish you want to preserve, stop before treating the rest of the shoe.

This applies to protection as well as cleaning. Renapur Suede & Fabric Protector is water-based and wets the material during application, so it also needs a patch test and the full drying time.

Common suede cleaning mistakes to avoid

  • Putting suede shoes in the washing machine or soaking them.
  • Brushing wet mud into the fibres.
  • Scrubbing hard or repeatedly treating the same mark.
  • Using heat to speed up drying.
  • Applying a product widely before a patch test has dried.
  • Using Renapur Leather Cleaner Spray or Leather Balsam on suede or nubuck.

Choose products specifically suitable for the material. Household remedies such as washing-up liquid, vinegar or alcohol are not our recommended starting point for suede care.

Why prevention is better than correction

Suede has a soft, raised surface called the nap. Dirt can settle between these fibres, while liquids can soak into the material and leave marks. Once a stain has become established, removing it may be difficult.

For suitable, untreated footwear, applying protection before the first wear helps you start with a clean surface. Check for an existing protective treatment first, as this may prevent another protector from absorbing properly.

Renapur Suede & Fabric Protector helps suitable suede repel water and stains. Continue brushing away loose dirt and dealing with spills promptly. Protection reduces the risk of marking, but it does not make shoes completely waterproof or stainproof.

Protect your suede after cleaning

Once the suede is clean, dry and free from cleaning residue, consider whether it needs protection. Check the maker’s guidance and any existing repellent finish before applying a new treatment.

For suitable suede, patch test Renapur Suede & Fabric Protector and let the test dry fully. Apply evenly until the surface is damp to the touch, then gently work the spray into the material with a soft brush. Leave for 24 hours and allow the footwear to dry completely before wearing it.

We recommend reapplying every six months, or as required. Regular care and prompt attention to spills remain important between applications.

Your suede cleaning questions answered

Can you clean suede shoes with water?

Open tab

Avoid soaking suede or washing it with soap and water. Some manufacturer-approved cleaning methods use controlled moisture, but the correct method depends on the footwear. Always follow the relevant instructions and test first.

Can Renapur Sneaker Cleaner be used on suede?

Open tab

Yes, it is suitable for routine cleaning of compatible suede and nubuck. Check the footwear maker’s guidance and test on a hidden area first. It is designed for everyday dirt, rather than established stains or permanent discolouration.

Why do my suede shoes look darker after cleaning?

Open tab

Moisture can temporarily darken suede. Allow the shoes to dry completely before assessing them. If the colour remains uneven or the texture has changed, stop further treatment and ask the footwear maker or a specialist for advice.

Will cleaning restore faded or damaged suede?

Open tab

Cleaning may improve the appearance by removing dirt, and brushing can help lift flattened fibres. It cannot be relied on to restore lost colour, repair worn suede or reverse every stain. Specialist restoration may be needed.

Does suede protector remove existing stains?

Open tab

No. Renapur Suede & Fabric Protector helps protect against future water absorption and staining; it does not remove existing marks.

Wetting the suede during application can temporarily make existing stains look darker and more noticeable. Allow the suede to dry completely before judging its appearance.

Deal with any cleaning needs before applying protection, and always test on a hidden area first.

Make prevention part of your suede care routine

Protect suitable suede before the first wear, brush away loose dirt regularly and use wet cleaning only when needed. Prevention is better than correction, especially with a material whose colour and texture can change during treatment.
