Suede, Nubuck & Fabric Protector: The Complete Guide

Suede boots, white trainers and a favourite handbag all pick up marks through everyday use.

Renapur Suede & Fabric Protector helps repel water, dirt, oil and stains on suede, nubuck, canvas and other suitable absorbent materials. It creates a protective barrier that helps liquids stay on the surface instead of soaking into the material.

Here is how to choose the right treatment, apply it and keep your items protected.

How to protect suede boots and shoes

Whether you wear suede boots every day or keep a pair for special occasions, regular care helps maintain their appearance. Brush away loose dirt gently and use a cleaner suitable for the material if more cleaning is needed. Follow the footwear maker’s care guidance throughout.

For suitable, untreated suede or nubuck, apply protection before the first wear. With an older pair, clean them first and check whether an earlier protective treatment is still present.

Apply the protector evenly across the suitable upper, including the material around seams and folds. Follow the application steps below and allow the full drying time before wearing your boots.

Protecting UGG boots

Check the care instructions for your particular UGG style before adding any treatment. Pre-treated boots already have a repellent finish, which can stop another protector from absorbing properly.

Renapur can be used to renew protection on suitable suede or sheepskin uppers once the previous treatment has worn away. Follow the cleaning guidance for that model, test a hidden area and allow the full drying time.

How to protect trainers and sneakers

A trainer protector spray can help care for suede, nubuck and absorbent fabric uppers. Start by identifying the materials on your pair, because one trainer may combine several different finishes.

Check suede panels, canvas sections, smooth leather overlays and decorative details separately. A product suitable for one part of the shoe may not suit every other part, so follow the maker’s care instructions before treating mixed materials.

For suitable uppers, apply Renapur using the steps below and leave the trainers for 24 hours before wearing them. Plan ahead so that they have a full day to dry.

Keeping white trainers protected

Choose your white trainer care routine for the material rather than the colour. Deal with dirt and spills promptly, and test your protector on a discreet area first.

If your trainers need cleaning, Renapur Sneaker Cleaner is an option after checking its suitability for their materials. Remove cleaning residues before applying protector.

Protective spray will not remove existing marks or restore yellowed soles. Clean first, then protect the suitable upper to help reduce future staining.

Protecting suede and nubuck bags

A suede or nubuck bag is exposed to rain, accidental spills and everyday handling. Protection can help you care for the material, particularly on bags you use regularly.

Check the outer material and any contrasting trim before choosing a handbag protector spray. A smooth leather handle, suede body and decorative finish may each need different care. Test an area out of sight and allow it to dry before treating the rest.

Renapur is also trusted by Aspinal of London, which includes Renapur Nubuck Protector Spray in its care range for nubuck, suede and other suitable absorbent materials.

For bags with a specialist finish, follow the maker’s specific care advice. If you are unsure which Renapur product suits your bag, contact our team.

Protecting fabric sofas, upholstery and other textiles

Fabric sofas, armchairs and dining chairs face everyday spills, food marks and regular handling. A fabric protector spray can help suitable absorbent upholstery resist liquids and stains, making protection a useful part of caring for the furniture you use most.

Before treating a fabric sofa, check the manufacturer’s care instructions and whether it already has a stain-resistant finish. Existing treatments or coatings may prevent another protector from absorbing properly. Test a hidden area, allow it to dry fully and check the colour and feel before proceeding.

For suitable upholstery, remove dust, dirt and cleaning residues, then follow the application steps below. Allow the full 24-hour drying time before using the furniture again. Continue dealing with spills promptly to help reduce the risk of staining.

Canvas and other fabrics

Canvas shoes, suitable fabric bags and other absorbent textiles can also benefit from water and stain protection. Check the care label first, including any restrictions on wet treatment, and test a hidden area before applying.

For clothing or household textiles, consider their ongoing care too. Renapur advises avoiding ironing after treatment, because heat and steam can reduce the protector’s performance.

Choosing a protector for suede, nubuck and fabric

Suede and nubuck have a soft, raised surface, often called the nap. Choose a treatment intended for these materials so that you can protect them without adding a waxy finish.

Renapur Suede & Fabric Protector uses a water-based, non-aerosol formula without solvents or fluorinated “forever chemicals”. It is designed to preserve the material’s appearance, texture and breathability.

It is suitable for suede, nubuck, canvas, cotton, nylon and other compatible absorbent materials. Always check the item’s care instructions and test a hidden area, particularly where different materials or delicate trims are combined.

Smooth leather has different care needs. Our guide to leather conditioner for boots and shoes explains how to care for compatible smooth leather. Do not apply Leather Balsam to suede or nubuck.

Can you waterproof suede and trainers?

If you are looking for a waterproof spray for trainers or wondering whether you can waterproof suede, it helps to understand what a surface treatment can achieve.

A repellent treatment helps the material resist absorbing water. It does not change the construction of the item. Water may still enter footwear through openings, seams or joins, and extended soaking can exceed the protection offered by the treatment.

Use your boots, trainers or bag in conditions appropriate to their design. Protection helps with everyday splashes and spills, but it does not turn fashion footwear into waterproof outdoor boots.

How long does Renapur protection last?

We recommend reapplying Renapur Suede & Fabric Protector every six months, or as required, as part of your regular care routine.

How often an item needs treating depends on use and care. Check your items regularly and ask our team if you are unsure whether they need another application.

Continue to deal with spills promptly. Protection helps reduce the risk of staining, but works alongside regular cleaning and care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I protect new suede shoes straight away?

Open tab

For suitable, untreated suede, applying protection before the first wear helps you begin with a clean surface. Check whether the shoes are already pre-treated and follow their maker’s care instructions before applying anything.

Will protector change the colour of suede?

Open tab

Renapur is designed to preserve the original appearance. Suede may look darker during application because it is wet. Always test a hidden area first, let it dry completely and check the result before treating the whole item.

How much protector will I need?

Open tab

A 250 millilitre bottle treats up to ten pairs of shoes, while a 100 millilitre bottle treats up to four pairs. Larger items, such as sofas, and more absorbent materials use more product, so these figures are a guide for footwear rather than furniture.

Can I wash treated fabric?

Open tab

Follow the item’s own washing instructions. Renapur Protector is resistant to cleaning agents and washing, and hand washing is recommended where suitable to help retain protection for longer. Treatment does not make a non-washable item washable.

Can I use the same spray on every part of my trainers or bag?

Open tab

Only where it is suitable for each material and finish. Check mixed materials individually, including trims, coatings and pre-treated panels. If the maker’s instructions are unclear, ask for advice before applying.

Protect the things you use every day

A little preparation makes it easier to care for your favourite boots, trainers, bags and fabric furniture. Choose the right treatment for the material, follow the application instructions and give it time to dry.
