How to clean a leather sofa

How to clean your leather Sofas, Chairs and Furniture

A leather sofa is something you choose carefully. Whether yours has just arrived or has been part of the family for years, a little regular care helps keep it looking its best.

To clean a suitable smooth leather sofa, remove loose dirt, patch test a leather sofa cleaner, gently clean one section at a time and allow it to dry naturally. First, check your sofa’s material and the type of mark you are dealing with.

What type of leather sofa do you have?

Check the care label or manufacturer’s description. Common terms include:

  • Pigmented leather: Has a coloured surface coating.
  • Aniline leather: Has minimal surface protection and needs specific care.
  • Suede or nubuck: Has a soft, textured surface.
  • Bonded leather: Combines leather fibres with binding materials.
  • Faux leather: A synthetic leather-look material.

The method below is for suitable smooth, finished leather. For other finishes, follow the manufacturer’s specific instructions. If you are unsure, contact Renapur for advice.

Everyday dirt, a spill or a stubborn stain?

Once you know the material, consider what needs attention.

  • Dust, crumbs and surface grime: Follow the routine cleaning steps below.
  • A fresh spill: Blot promptly with a clean, absorbent cloth. Avoid rubbing or spreading the liquid.
  • Ink, dye transfer or ingrained grease: These need separate assessment. Routine leather cleaner is not intended to remove established stains.

Cracking, peeling or missing colour can indicate damage rather than dirt. Repeated cleaning will not repair the finish.

Choosing a leather sofa cleaner

For routine dirt, choose a cleaner intended for your sofa’s material and finish.

Renapur Leather Cleaner Spray lifts everyday surface dirt, grease and grime from suitable smooth leather. Its plant-based, non-abrasive formula comes ready to use, with no dilution or mixing.

That makes it straightforward to clean frequently used cushions, arms and backrests. For more help with product selection, read our complete guide to leather cleaner.

How to clean a leather sofa step by step

Before starting, gather:

A soft, dry cloth or vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment.

A suitable leather cleaner.

Clean, soft white cloths and, if preferred, a non-abrasive sponge.

Keep a separate cloth for wiping away loosened dirt. Remove throws and loose cushions where the sofa’s design allows, and protect surrounding fabric and flooring from the cleaning product.

Remove loose dust and crumbs

Gently wipe the sofa with a soft, dry cloth or brush. If using a vacuum cleaner, select low suction and a clean, soft brush attachment.

Pay attention to cushion gaps, piping and seams. Keep hard nozzle edges away from the leather so they do not scratch the surface.

Patch test the cleaner

Choose a hidden area with the same material and finish as the part you will clean.

Apply a little cleaner as directed, wipe and allow the test area to dry. Check for changes to the colour, texture or sheen.

Stop if the leather’s colour transfers to the cloth or the finish changes unexpectedly.

Clean one section at a time

Spray Renapur Leather Cleaner onto a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge. You can also spray directly onto suitable leather as directed, although using a cloth gives greater control around seams.

Gently wipe one cushion or panel at a time. Avoid soaking the leather or allowing liquid to collect around stitching.

Wipe away the loosened dirt

Use a clean, soft cloth to lift away the dirt, turning it regularly and replacing it when dirty.

Give armrests, seats and headrests particular attention. On dirtier areas, leave the Cleaner for 30 seconds before wiping.

Use gentle pressure. If a mark remains, stop and assess it rather than repeatedly scrubbing the same spot.

Allow the sofa to dry naturally

Let the surface dry before sitting on it, replacing throws or applying a suitable conditioner.

Avoid hairdryers, radiators and other sources of direct heat. Once dry, check the result. Any remaining marks can then be assessed separately from the everyday dirt you have removed.

How to clean a white or cream leather sofa

White and cream leather make dirt easier to notice, but the finish still determines the cleaning method.

Follow the steps above using clean, white cloths, changing them frequently so you do not spread lifted dirt. Clean evenly across the affected panel with gentle pressure.

A blue or dark mark that remains may be dye transfer. Treat it as a separate stain rather than applying more cleaner and scrubbing harder.

Stained suede leather

What if a stain remains after cleaning?

A remaining mark does not always mean the sofa needs more cleaning.

Ink, denim dye and ingrained grease may need specialist stain treatment. Pale patches, cracks and peeling can indicate damage to the colour or finish.

Avoid trying several household remedies on the same area. Ask a leather cleaning or repair specialist for advice, explaining what caused the mark and which products you have already used.

What should you avoid using on a leather sofa?

Avoid bleach, solvents, abrasive pads, stiff brushes and vigorous scrubbing. Baby wipes and household cleaning sprays may also affect the leather’s colour or finish.

Do not assume washing-up liquid, vinegar or another homemade mixture is suitable because it is familiar. Follow your sofa manufacturer’s care instructions.

Avoid soaking the leather, and do not use steam cleaning unless the manufacturer expressly approves it.

Protect your leather sofa before the next spill

Once your sofa is clean and dry, consider its ongoing care. Leather that feels drier or has lost some of its usual softness may benefit from conditioning.

Renapur Leather Balsam helps keep suitable smooth leather supple while adding protection against moisture and everyday marks. Apply sparingly after a separate patch test.

Do not use Balsam on suede, nubuck, fully aniline, bonded or faux leather. Protective treatment does not replace dealing with spills promptly.

What if your sofa is suede, nubuck or fabric?

These materials need their own cleaning methods and suitable protection.

For suitable suede, nubuck and fabric sofas, Renapur Upholstery Protector helps repel liquids and everyday dirt.

Follow the furniture and product instructions, clean appropriately before protection and test a hidden area first. These products help protect the material; they do not remove existing stains.

How often should you clean a leather sofa?

A weekly dust or gentle vacuum is a useful starting point. Blot spills promptly and use a suitable cleaner when dirt or grime begins to build up.

Check the arms, headrests and favourite seats regularly. A heavily used family sofa may need attention sooner than an occasional chair.

Condition suitable leather when its condition calls for it. You do not need to apply Balsam after every quick dust or light wipe.

Leather sofa cleaning questions

What is the best leather cleaner for sofas?

Open tab

Choose a cleaner that matches your sofa’s material and finish and is intended for the type of dirt you need to remove. For routine cleaning of suitable smooth leather, Renapur Leather Cleaner Spray offers a ready-to-use, plant-based option that lifts everyday dirt, surface grease and grime.

Established stains, such as ink or dye transfer, need separate assessment.

Can I clean a leather sofa with water?

Open tab

Use a lightly damp cloth only if the sofa manufacturer allows it. Some absorbent leathers mark when wet. Avoid soaking the surface, and do not assume water alone will lift accumulated grease or grime.

Can I use Renapur Leather Cleaner on a faux leather sofa?

Open tab

Renapur Leather Cleaner Spray can be used on suitable polyurethane and vinyl. Follow the sofa’s care instructions and patch test before cleaning.

Do not follow with Leather Balsam, which is designed for real leather and is not suitable for faux leather.

Can I clean a suede or nubuck sofa?

Open tab

Suede and nubuck need different care from smooth leather, so the cleaning method above is not suitable. Follow your sofa manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. For ingrained dirt, spills or staining, seek advice from a professional experienced in cleaning these absorbent materials.

Prevention is particularly valuable. Once the sofa is clean and dry, Renapur Upholstery Protector helps protect suitable suede, nubuck & fabric upholstery against liquids and everyday dirt.

Always test a hidden area first and deal with spills promptly. Protectors help prevent future marks; they do not remove existing stains.

Can I remove scratches or prevent cracks in my leather sofa?

Open tab

Cleaning alone will not remove scratches. However, Renapur Leather Balsam conditions suitable smooth leather and can help reduce the appearance of light surface scratches and scuffs.

Conditioning when needed also helps keep leather supple and prevent the dryness that can lead to cracking. Apply Balsam sparingly to clean, dry leather after testing a hidden area.

Deep scratches, existing cracks and peeling finishes may need professional repair. Balsam cannot replace missing leather or repair a damaged coating.

See our guide to conditioning leather furniture for the full method.

How long does a leather sofa take to dry after cleaning?

Open tab

Drying time depends on the finish, the amount of moisture applied and the room conditions. Allow the sofa to dry naturally before sitting on it, replacing throws or applying conditioner.

Avoid hairdryers, radiators and other sources of direct heat, and follow the product and furniture instructions.

Ready to clean your leather sofa?

Choose Renapur Leather Cleaner Spray for everyday dirt and surface grime on suitable smooth leather. Keep a bottle and a soft cloth ready to make regular sofa care straightforward.

Check the material, patch test first and follow the cleaning steps above.
